Asiana Airlines
Asiana Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance and operates on 73 international routes, in 12 domestic destinations and 17 countries worldwide. The airline was established on February 17, 1988 by the Kumho Asiana Group and started with flights to Busan in December 1988. Private investors own 30.53% of the airline and it has a staff of 7,799.
In 2007, Asiana Airlines received the prestigious five-star ranking award from Skytrax and shared the honour with other esteemed airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Kingfisher Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Cathay Pacific. On February 17, 2009, Asiana Airlines was awarded "Airline of the Year" by Air Transport World, one of the highest recognitions that can be given in the airline industry.
On June 9, 2006, Asiana Airlines Flight 8942 A321-100 (HL7594) routing Jeju-Seoul encountered a hailstorm that destroyed its radar and damaged the front window and nose cone. Nevertheless, the pilots were able to land the plane safely at Gimpo Airport. On November 11, 1998, Asiana Airlines’ B747-400m, while attempting a U-turn at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, hit the winglet of an Aeroflot Ilvushin II-62M plane. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Despite other minor incidents from the early years of Asiana Airlines, the Kumho Asiana Group, its parent company, continually facilitates improvement and modernisation to Asiana Airlines in order to provide their valued passengers with first-rate service and optimum safety.
