Wright Brothers’ First Airplane

On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers designed and built the first powered heavier-than-air human flight in the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their invention and flight was credited by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, a governing body for aeronautics and astronautics world records. After two years, they enhanced their flying machine into a practical aircraft.

The Wright brothers invented the ‘three-axis control’ that enables the pilot to guide the aircraft successfully and to keep it in equilibrium. This way became the main principle on all kinds of fixed-wing aircrafts. From the start of their aeronautical work, the Wright brothers fixed their minds to unlocking the secrets of the controls in order to conquer the problems encountered during the flight. They conducted tests to enable them to design and build more effective wings and propellers than before. An official document was published that claims their formulation of a certain system in aerodynamics regarding the manipulation of a flying machine.

Personal experiences in their shop gained them the right mechanical skills essential for their success. Their work with bicycles, for example, influenced their beliefs that a vehicle in motion like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practise. Aside from personal experiences earned in their shop, extensive glider tests also developed their skills as pilots. With the assistance of Charlie Taylor, the construction of the first aircraft engine became possible.

Counter claims from former aviators regarding the Wright brother’s status as inventors of the first plane still continue up to this day.
